Mr & Mrs Mortby's hup! story

The temperature was an issue with Mr & Mrs Mortby’s old conservatory – the space was very hot in summer and very cold in winter and there were also condensation problems. Due to this the walls had become damp and considering all of the issues, the couple decided it was time to upgrade their conservatory!

They had recently laid a new floor in the conservatory and so ideally, they wanted to preserve this, as well as keeping the shape of the conservatory, which they were happy with. They spoke to their local hup! builder who explained to them that by using hup! they could use their existing base as hup! is so lightweight, and build a new hup! extension on top of their base with walls, windows and doors wherever they liked in the design.

Working with their hup! builder, Mr & Mrs Mortby chose a design that incorporated a hybrid roof with glazed panels, floor-to-ceiling windows and bi-fold doors.

Explaining about their decision to use hup! and the build process, Mr Mortby said: “There was a significant cost saving in keeping the original conservatory base and since the original footings were no longer suitable for a traditional build with bricks and mortar, the lightweight nature of the hup! reduced the cost and the build time.

We were not aware of the speed of a hup! build until our builder explained it to us and this factor helped us to decide to proceed with hup!.

The team removed our old conservatory and made the opening secure and weathertight. They started our hup! transformation on a Monday and by Wednesday evening, only three days later we were fully watertight with all of the windows, doors and roof panels in place!”

“Although the entire roof was glazed in the old conservatory, it was polycarbonate which doesn’t let huge amounts of light through. Our new hup! hybrid roof has six large glazed panels, and because they are clear glass, they let in huge amounts of light and this, combined with our new bi-fold doors and large windows means that our new room is full of light which gives it a lovely feel.

In terms of the temperature, our hup!  is a much more comfortable space to spend time in now all year round. The space is set up with a dining area and a sitting area in the bay. We now eat more frequently at the dining table and enjoy looking out onto the garden through the large glass panels. Having a full height wall on one side makes our new space feel like a proper room which would not have been possible on our existing footings.
