James's hup! story
When James and his wife bought their home, it had a conservatory which was around 15-20 years old. Although their home is large, the downstairs had lots of separate rooms that didn’t work as well as they could do for James, his wife and their 3 young children.
The conservatory was small and faceted in shape and didn’t get used very often as James explained: “Our old conservatory was small and cold, and we didn’t use it very often. It was cold in the winter and too hot in the summer and wasn’t a very useful space. We ended up realising that we might as well not have it and decided to look at options of how to improve it such as just changing the roofing system or completely rebuilding it.”

Complete design flexibility
The family decided to completely remodel their ground floor layout – knocking several rooms together, knocking through into the conservatory and also extending the footprint of the old conservatory using the hup! system. The aim was to create a larger open plan room that would work much better for their family.
Explaining more, James said: “We contracted a builder to change the layout of our ground floor – we chose to have a knock-through of our old kitchen into what was the breakfast room, and then a further knock-through and an increase in size to the old conservatory footprint. The walls of the new extension were built with hup! and formed part of our new open plan kitchen, as well as providing space for a brand new utility room – something that we didn’t have previously and that we knew would be a great asset to us as a family of 5.”

James and his wife chose to have a flat roof on their hup! with a large lantern over the lounge area to create a beautiful focal point and also bring a huge amount of light into the new room below. The design included two sets of sliding doors on the rear and side aspects of the hup! to create the link out to their garden, and allow the family to enjoy views of the outdoors, whatever the weather. They chose flush finish windows for the new utility to complement those on the rest of their home.
Speaking about their hup! design and how the new space has changed how they live in their home, James said: “We were concerned that the new room was going to be large and might not have enough light and so we chose a very large lantern to go on the flat roof and this was a fantastic addition that adds lots of natural light into the building.”
A brand new way of building - and living
“When it came to the build, one of the great advantages of the hup! system was the speed at which the new building actually becomes watertight. This was really important for us as we continued to live in our home during the build. It took around three days for the walls and the roof to go on and our builder told us that this would normally have taken two or three weeks if this had been done in standard block work and brickwork! The speed of the build was a big factor in why we chose the hup! system, together with its installation properties and the positive experience our builders already had of using it.”
“The new space has totally revolutionised family time in our house and we now spend most of our time in this open-plan kitchen living area. Our children bring in their toys to play, our older children do their homework whilst we’re doing the cooking and the cleaning and the tidying and we can all be together.”
It is clear that this family have created a space that really has changed how they live together in their home and which works much better for them than their previous layout. Concluding about their decision to build with the hup! system, James said: “Having an extension built with the hup! system, I have no hesitation to recommend it to other people. It’s warm with a very quick build method, and I have no hesitation that it was the right thing to do. I’m glad that we chose to use hup! rather than bricks and mortar for its speed and convenience and how insulating it is.”

"hup! is an absolute game changer”

“For homeowners, hup! is completely game changing. People often ask how they can add an extension or rebuild their unusable conservatory in the most efficient way possible – hup! is definitely the answer. I’ve been totally blown away by the engineering behind the whole thing. Not only is it just a brilliant system, the great thing about it is it’s so quick.”
